This service provides the Intrinsic Viscosity (IV) of any polymeric material, including challenging ones such as high and ultrahigh molar mass polymers.
The viscosity test is performed in Polymer Char’s Intrinsic Viscosity Analyzer (IVA), which is compatible with any organic solvent such as decalin, tetralin, tri-chlorobenzene (TCB) and ortho-dichlorobenzene (o-DCB) among many others. Dissolution and analysis temperatures can be set independently, from ambient temperature to 200ºC, so that a wide range of polymers can be analyzed, even the most crystalline ones.
A study conducted by Polymer Char with different polymers in various solvents – PAN (polyacrylonitrile) in DMF (N,N-dimethylformamide), PET in phenol:o-DCB, PLA in TCB, and polyolefins in TCB and o-DCB – shows that all the intrinsic viscosity results obtained with IVA are in good agreement with the standard methods used as reference (compared to IV obtained with the traditional glass capillaries of the Ubbelohde type ISO 1628-3:2010 f.i.).

IVA method, 35ºC (dL/g)
Correlation of intrinsic viscosity (IV) values obtained using the IVA method compared to IV determined using a traditional glass capillary setup for a set of PET samples. In both cases a mixture of phenol:o-DCB (2:3, m:v) was used while temperatures were 35ºC and 25ºC respectively.
IVA method TCB @150ºC (dL/g)
Correlation of intrinsic viscosity (IV) values obtained using the IVA method compared to IV determined according to standard method ISO 1628-3:2010 for a set of polypropylene samples. IVA was run in tri-chlorobenzene at 150ºC, using solutions prepared at 1 mg/mL; the ISO method was performed in decalin at 135ºC with solutions at 1-1.5 mg/mL. The linear correlation is excellent as proved by the high R2 value.

The fractionation service is available thanks to the Instruments PREP mc2 and PREP C20, capable of fractionating samples by molecular weight or by composition (TREF or CRYSTAF). Please visit the link Preparative Fractionation for more information.
The resulting fractions are later analyzed by the corresponding technique (GPC or TREF/CRYSTAF) to check the good performance of the fractionation process. Finally, the physical fractions are sent back to the customer by courier service as well as the analysis results of the fractions, so the customer can check the separation.

The standard response time is 3 weeks. This time is approximate and depends on the analysis queue in the laboratory at the time of the order. Polymer Char will inform the customer at the time of the order in case the response time is expected to be longer.
Urgent services (results sent within 10 days from the samples receipt) might be requested with a 50% surcharge. Please consult with Polymer Char the availability of this service and delivery time at the time of the order.
