Abstract:
Despite the simple chemistry of most synthetic polymers, Polyolefins still demand an intensive and multifisciplinary effort in its microstructure characterization. Besides the Molar Mass Distribution and the presence or not of Long Chain Branching, there exists a wide range of structural features in the polyolefin molecular architecture.
In the industrial practice, new resin design through composition changes (multiple catalyst/reactor, or new comonomers) is becoming the most demanding field, and improved and new analytical tools are required. A review of the most important techniques developed in the past years such as: GPC-IR and CEF are presented, together with the most recent work in Interaction Chromatography, and the measurement of the Bivariate Distribution by Cross Fractionation Chromatography.
